East Dunbartonshire (called Siorrachd Dhun Bhreatainn an Ear in Scottish Gaelic) has its main council offices in the town of Kirkintilloch. Auld Kirk Museum is housed within a 17th century building in Kirkintilloch and among the exhibits are local artefacts from the Neolithic period, Roman period and the Industrial Revolution. The museum also runs a range of events and activities, including exhibitions of arts and crafts. Located in the town of Milngavie, Lillie Art Gallery opened in the early 1960s as the result of a bequest from local artist Robert Lillie, who also gave hundreds of his own artworks to the gallery. The collection of Modern art dates from the late nineteenth century and through the 20th century to contemporary artwork. There is work by a number Scottish artists, including paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture as well as exhibits created using media such as ceramics, textiles and glass.
