Shou sagi ban bowl

A small wooden bowl with a charred finish, approximately 4 inches diamter. Turned from ash, and finished with walnut oil.

Shou sugi ban is an ancient japanese technique for preserving wood. After turning the bowl and giving it time to dry, a blowtorch is used to char the outside of the wood. This is then sanded, giving a really smooth finish. Finally, walnut oil is applied.
