Hand turned or carved wood products using East Anglian sourced wood.
Wood is a naturally grown resource with all these products have been crafted by myself in my workshop in the fens in Chatteris. The species used vary between Ash, Oak, Beech, Birch, Lime, Larch. Yew, Apple, Cherry etc. These can be obtained from Tree Surgeons or from Sawyers with the section of lumber being in the round or cut into thick planks.
The raw wood is then cut into smaller sections and this varies dependant on the intended use of the piece.
The process either involves mounting the piece on a lathe to turn into the finished shape, it is then sanded through various grits with the option of having a finish applied. Modern style pieces retain the sections of how the piece was secured on the lathe, bowls and platters of the medieval period do not have any of these with the base of the item being slightly dished to avoid wobbling.
Carved items like a dough bowl start from a section of plank with a hand axe to form the basic form then and an adze is used to form the dish with any further carving done using gouges and chisels. Finally the piece is finished off by sanding to a smooth finish, occasionally a beeswax finish is applied but generally it is left to the user to decide.
Please be aware that wood is a natural product and over a period of time may crack or distort by avoiding placing near sources of heat and regularly nourishing the wood with waxes or polishes the piece should have a long life.
We do not use single use plastic in the
production of this item.
