Marianne van Niekerken - Willow weaving

Marianne van Niekerken

“Baskets in Willow and hedgerow which are not just functional, but also naturally colourful and in lovely shapes.”

A basket maker for 9 years now, I was taught by a woodsman and found the craft very therapeutic, in comparison to my busy job. So much so, that I got hooked on the various possibilities with natural colour, texture, weaves and shapes.

I design functional baskets, but also take on commissions. I work mainly in flowing shapes, and materials I use are Willow, Birch, Beech, Hazel, Ash, stripped Brambles, Siberian Dogwood and anything that is flexible and has an interesting texture or colour.

Having no studio to work from, I weave amongst nature, outside, in all kinds of weather.

I sell my baskets through Farmers Markets and Fairs and often demonstrate. Should you be interested in a demonstration for your nature-related event, or should you wish to know more about what I do, then please contact me and I will be able to send you a link to my photo gallery.

Do you have a design of your own, which youd like me to carry out, or just a thought that needs some work for it to take shape on paper, perhaps by looking through designs Ive done in the past, then dont hesitate to contact me. Consultations are free of charge. Naturally.
