Susan Pearson - Felting

Susan Pearson

“The making of pictures, jewellery, scarves and bags using hand- made felt as a medium.”

I have for sometime , worked with a variety of arts and craft media, but I am now focused on producing my own hand-made felt in the creation of pictures and decorative artefacts.
I am a retired radiographer, and have always enjoyed inter-action with people, so along side this, I have done voluntary work over the years, which included doing different craft work with groups. I now do this along side building up my craft stall.
A few years ago I attained the City and Guilds Fashion Design Certificate, and the Further Education Teaching Certificate.
I have been married for over forty years, and have two daughters and grandchildren, with whom I do craft work, out in the garden if possible, where I get inspiration, and am also inspired when I go for walks with my husband and being aware of the changing seasons. Another source of inspiration has been from China, when visiting one of our daughters and her family. They have now moved to Manila, so another source for ideas! I work from home , in a bedroom at the back of the house, which has a lovely view over to the South Downs.
The felting method I practice is wet felting, which combines different coloured unspun wool fibres, fabric made of natural fibres (I.e. silk), olive oil soap and warm water, all worked together on a textured surface (I.e. bubble-
wrap), which helps to give plenty of agitation. This produces a diverse and flexible felt, which is then used in assembling and creating scenic and abstract pictures, decorated scarves, jewellery and handbags.
My pictures are scenic, some are abstract, large and small, and some contain small pieces of natural fabric within the felt, and also embroidery. On one of the pictures, at the end of the road, there is a Chinese influence.
The summer scarves are cobwebby thin, nuno-felted onto silk chiffon.
The winter scarves use more unspun wool with small pieces of silk fabric enclosed in the felt.
Necklaces are different styles. Chain linked with silk thread scarf necklaces, which are soft around the neck.
I thought it would be rather fun to enclose a piece of crochet in some.
Statement necklaces with large hand-made felt beads and semi-precious stones.
With a brooch to the side, my signature necklaces.
Brooches and hairslides comprising of shaped multi-coloured hand-made felt.
Some bracelets with Chinese sliding knot fastenings!
Bags are mostly for evenings, silk lined, all different felted designs and colours.
I am always thinking of new designs for necklaces, and new images for the nuno-felted scarves.
I take my stall to craft fairs, mainly in West Sussex.
As I work from home, I am quite happy to show my products from there.
Also customised designs and colours may be made to order.
