Meirion Harries Photography

Photographer of people, plants, places and atmosphere. Believer in the unique power of the still image in a world on the move.

I am a professional photographer, with one London exhibition past and another coming up. I offer work on different scales, with a wide range of prices, from museum-quality fine art prints for framing to postcards and greetings cards. My subjects range from street culture to the seaside out of season, the lives of plants to the death of buildings, and portraits animal and human. My aim is to produce images that give you something new each time you look at them, and stay in the mind as a source of pleasure, amusement or comfort - looking for the truths that lie behind the surfaces we see and feel.

I came to photography seriously fifteen years ago when I first started work in a social enterprise dedicated to supporting disadvantaged people through multimedia tools. I have taken tens of thousands of still images and shot and edited over 400 short films with and for disadvantaged people, charities, the NHS and local authorities. Over the years, this dual mode of working has convinced me of the supremacy of the still image in conveying a deeper, more personal narrative than film. Still photography has the unique capacity to capture the essence of an object, a person or a place - a moment when the subject becomes an icon of itself. While film can only accumulate meaning by a series of sensations, a still image lays it bare at a stroke. Atmosphere is everything.

Ideally, an image will tell you not only about its subject, but something about the photographer and, perhaps, something about yourself as well: in an increasingly crowded and confusing world, photographs are an aid to mindfulness and a source of peace.

I am based in London, which is for me a never-ending source of odd, beautiful and intriguing subject matter, but I have worked, and photographed, all over England and travelled a good deal in Europe, with a particular interest in and fondness for Spain.

Please go to the website under my name to see examples of my work, which I hope will tell you more than I can put into words. You will find images under different headings which should give you an idea of the range of my work - from Blackpool Coast and Lives of Plants to Spanish Ephemera and Loire Upstream. But I hope all the images share the same qualities of curiosity and a passion for capturing atmosphere and the essence of things.
