Hold Your Horse

Handmade horse and pet hair jewellery, Kumihimo, Fine and Sterling silver, pearl knotting plus genuine gemstone jewellery.

My name is Dawn Farrington and I’ve lived in Bridgnorth for over 30 years, having moved from Shirley when I came here to teach.
For as long as I can remember I’ve had a go at all sorts of different crafts – Macramé, Spinning, Cake decorating, Bobbin lace making, Crochet, Knitting, Kumihimo braiding (Japanese braiding), Tatting, Candle making, Embroidery, Quilting………….Having said that I came to jewellery making via cake decorating. A friend asked me to go with her to night school for cake decorating. One of the skills which I learned was making sugar flowers. A little while later I came across Silver Clay and a lot of the techniques involved in my sugar work transferred well to this. On one of the Silver Clay courses I attended I had the opportunity to experiment with glass fusing and that is leading down yet more avenues.

I remember doing macramé when I was younger and have revisited this with an array of materials and this has led me to start Kumihimo braiding – this is a Japanese style of braiding. I have tried all sorts of materials from the normal rattail silks through horse hair and chain – I figure if it bends it braids! The horse hair braids have proved particularly popular. These are normally made to order, although I have had people buy my sample braids which I make from my own horse’s tail hair. As a result of the interest in my horse hair work I have now started to produce Sterling Silver pieces set with resin which is used to encase horse or pet hair. Some of my commissions have been to produce jewellery from horse teeth and also pieces to encase the ashes of loved ones.
