Felt 4 Art Sake

I am a felt artist specialising in hand-felted clothing and accessories as well as art for display.

Sushila Pillai is a textile artist specialising in the use of felt –making techniques to create art and clothing. The interplay of texture, colour and shape is an important aspect of Sushila’s work. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Sushila aims to create work which expresses this. All her pieces invite the viewer to touch and much of her work is designed to exploit this tactile quality. Sushila’s wearable art pieces are intended not only to be good to look at, but, also to be pleasurable to feel against the body. She finds that the technique of Nuno-felting achieves this perfectly. By employing a variety of felting techniques, Sushila’s art for display is created to invoke memories of the textures and colours around us through an imaginative rather than realistic re-creation of previous sensory experiences. Her work is not placed behind glass so that the viewer can be encouraged to look closely and even touch.
