Hannah Cantellow is a Wiltshire based artist and trained printmaker, she has specialised in both Fine Art and Printmaking.
When something is carved it is transformed, made real, discoverable. The nature of working with both wood and linoleum becomes an alchemical process and experience. It is the conjuring of an image into being, that is how print making stole Hannah’s heart. The act of printing is a physical one, carving stories and uncovering tales, creating imaginary places combined with real life and lived ones. The language of marks that she translates from the natural world brings her landscapes alive, through sweeping lines, undulating shapes, wide fluid skies, rhythmic patterns and earthly movement. Hannah hopes to evoke a sense of experience, as if you’ve just been there, a falling in love with the world, again. A connection with a place, with a story, even if for a fleeting minute, that deeper connection to ourselves, a moment, historic and spiritual with nature – this means everything to her. An impression on paper but a lasting impression in the heart. This is what she works to create, a window into another world, a moment where you can dream into what you see, pause, ponder, connect, question, unravel. She creates to reveal the interconnectedness of things. She creates to enchant.
Hannah Cantellow is a Wiltshire based printmaker, she has specialised in Fine Art and Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking and later completed her MA in Social Sculpture and Connective Practice at Oxford Brookes University in 2018. Walking informs much of her practice and she draws upon interconnected experiences to create prints that tell their own unique story, which she calls token of place.
Inspired by Wiltshires rolling hills and vast skies, stone circles and the iconic clumps of trees, wherever she walks, the landscape brings continuous inspiration through its patterns of enchantment and magical charm.
During her MA she explored other ways of being in and with the natural world, which enabled her to deepen her artistic sense of self and pursue her impulse for storytelling.
Observing, making and learning with nature through being immersed in its many wondrous forms has been a fascination for Hannah since she can remember. The objects she collects call out to her and provide a vital resource as her cabinet of curiosities at her home printmaking studio in Devizes. Hannah specialises in creating original limited edition linocut and woodcut relief prints in her garden studio and teaches workshops across Wiltshire. She creates prints on her Hawthorn etching press and lever press, as well as using hand burnishing techniques.
