Art On The Slate

After a 40+ yr. career as a theatre director and stage designer, which gave me experience in using a very wide (and sometimes very unusual) range of materials, I now specialise in original paintings on slates, originally from abandoned rural cottages in Brittany and Scotland, but now from wherever I can get them (builders skips, mostly). My holiday cottage in Brittany gives me access to a (very) small supply of slate pieces direct from the quarry. A couple of these are included in my online catalogue. Whether more will be available will be subject to Covid travel restrictions.
I work in acrylic paints and a range of collage materials (pebbles, seashells, small driftwood, old jewellery, etc).
Commissions invited. Any subject - your house name/number, your house, favourite place, your boat, your pet, your children, you...You can stipulate colour scheme, tone (cheery or sombre). Also theme - seascapes, ships, mythological subjects are popular, especially shipwrecks! My pieces have been bought as engagement or wedding presents, Valentine gifts, commemorative pieces etc., As I work on reclaimed slates, sizes are regulated by what is available (commonly up to 25x50cm), but thats open to discussion. I try to incorporate any fractures, blemishes, etc., so that the slate retains a sense of its former life sometimes I add fragments to simulate this.
