Elaine King Ceramics

Contemporary bespoke ceramics

THE ARTIST
Elaine’s passion for ceramics developed many years ago at school during her 6th form. She soon followed this by studying a degree in Ceramics at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London. It was there that she was fortunate enough to experience the wonderful tutoring of contemporary, and now eminent, ceramists Ewen Henderson, Janice Tralenko, Glynis Barton, Ian Auld and the great Colin Pearson.
Whilst at Camberwell, Elaine developed a body of work through throwing, hand-building and slip-casting, all the while concentrating on the importance of it being punctuated with texture, colour and sculptural elements.

THE EDUCATOR

Elaine’s lengthy teaching career in Higher Education, Adult Education and secondary schools led to her delivering creative courses in all aspects of art and ceramics. Through sharing her expertise and thinking processes, she has constantly fed her appetite for the journey of creating, thinking and making.
More recently she has offered tuition to small group adult classes and one-to-one tuition. Between April and October 2021 Elaine will be running a number of ceramic workshops from her garden studio in Reading. They range from one day, weekend and evening class experiences as well as bespoke workshops to suit. Please contact her by email for further details.

THE CERAMICIST

Now working independently, Elaine is making the exciting journey as a ceramic artist. She is fast becoming recognised as an established British maker. Her ceramic artwork is collected in the UK and overseas. Whilst still teaching some adult classes, she has developed her own hand-built techniques and designs in both functional and sculptural ceramics. Her work derives from particular influences and impressions sourced in texture, colour and pattern through archaeological and historical contexts. Early work has been formed through investigations into Roman jewellery. Each piece is unique and often finished with a ceramic lustre. Elaines Flora and Fauna pieces demonstrate her love of colour, texture and form, mostly inspired by surfaces and patterns found in the landscape. Her inspiration comes from observations made in natural habitats hedgerows, garden borders, meadow and more recently seascapes. She creates shapes and textures in white earthenware clay and uses a palette of subtle oxides and underglaze colours. She devotes time making studies in her garden or walks along the Cornish Lizard peninsula, one of her most favourite places in the world.
More recently Elaine has developed a selection of both functional and non-functional hand-built ceramics, beautifully decorated, inspired and designed through her love of pattern and colour in the natural world.
