Ligament Art

Images of intimacy painted in acrylic onto patchwork composed using recycled upholstery fabrics stretched on a frame.

Enjoying all forms of creative practise and respecting craftsmanship I have experimented with a range of processes and have endeavoured to broaden students minds in this way as a Secondary Art and Design teacher. Now I have found a particular way of working that I find personal satisfaction in which involves the reuse of domestic fabrics that as pieces themselves come to represent the spaces they relate to. They are united in Cubist style compositions as I develop my base canvas. Preferring to struggle with the unexpected I prefer not to prime the surface but work directly into the varying textures of the fabrics to paint the image I have planned, always beginning with the highlights. I have found that my work speaks more clearly when I do not overwork it and perhaps even leave elements particularly ‘unfinished’ and allow strokes to be gestural. Significance in each image and truth in it is deeply important to me. I hope others find this in the work.

I am willing to work with most machinable materials and images and I am therefore open to developing canvases and painted commissions that might have even more personalised content stitched and worked into them for customers. Please do feel free to contact me with any questions.
