Trinkets inspired by nature jewellery, and gift items from repurposed materials in pride by my love of nature and growing up in Afri
I was lucky enough grow up in the African bush - where as a child, jewellery, crafts and everyday items were made from materials that grew around us- or could be repurposed such as seeds and pods - items washed up on the beach, broken glass that could be tumbled in to vibrant beads and Semi precious stones, and grasses to weave. Diverse cultures, their adornments and meanings, colours and textures has influenced my work as each piece has representation by the type of materials used, enhancing and embracing my love of nature, its colours and simplicity much of which I still incorporate into my work today. Each piece i make is a once off item, incorporating as many natural materials, semi precious stones or beach pebbles and natural materials i have spent hours scouring the coast for. I incorporate a lot of silver in my work, having been fascinated by the mining of Malachite and watching local craftsmen work silver into fine intricate chains and bracelets in Zambia. For many years I worked in fast paced, demanding industries all over the world from oil exploration, as a commercial pilot and for international relief agencies. No matter how far my travels and work took me, I was always drawn to the colours and vibrancy of the cultures, their local handicraft and adornments i encountered.
Having given up the rat race so to speak, I now take pleasure in calmly creating my crafts mindful of many different tastes, age groups and budgets. From simple pendant necklaces, earrings and bracelets - affordable for those wanting to spend their pocket money, or purchase an affordable gift for a friend, to statement pieces made from gemstones and silver, consciously combining the healing properties of each stone, there is something for everyone. Conscious of current environment issues, I will often repurpose items and incorporate them into my work. My philosophy is that wearing any item of jewellery - or a handcrafted item displayed in your home should bring joy.
