Ian Swithenbank Ceramics

Graduated in Applied Arts BA (Hons) from Leeds Met University. Specialising in contemporary ceramics

I specialise in ceramics and focus on the textures and qualities of various types of clay. My work demonstrates a variety of firing techniques and glazes that help illustrate the enjoyment I get from working with the clay. I allow my thoughts and decision making to influence the way in which a piece develops, often producing something unexpected.

Inspired by the natural surroundings and organic surfaces, the ceramic forms created embody the varied surfaces and textures of the local landscape. This, combined with my love of sculpture and the human form have led to some distinctive figurative pieces.

I draw inspiration from my natural surroundings and I have recently focused on contemporary images of skylines of major cities such as New York, with the various textures and layering of glazes. I and complimented this with the introduction of free standing buildings inspired by my travels.
